Nicole & Dave's wedding - vows by candlelight

Nicole & Dave were so willing to just have fun and be real. They were not only happy to go along with whatever concepts I presented, but also chipped a few great ideas of their own.  Their wedding was a truthful tale of their unique and beautiful romance.  In the morning, I decided to stop by the old barber shop where the guys were getting a straight razor shave and then headed over to Manteo Resort where the girls were getting ready.  After the craze of lacing up the dress, we produced some beautiful glamour shots and went out to the Manteo warf to create some stunning portraits. Their ceremony was lit my about 300 candles, which provided a beautiful atmosphere for their personal vows to each other. Then came my time for some creative portraiture both at around the Summerhill estate at sunset and then the Manteo warf at dusk integrating some unique lighting to provide a dramatic effect.  The night was supposed to end there for us; however, Nicole and Dave graciously invited my assistant, Jason and myself to join them for their reception and dinner - it was a blast!

Sarah Jane & David's wedding - red & white in loving harmony

Upon arriving at Sarah Jane's family home, it was filled with her joyful Italian family starting the celebrations early.  Jason Krumm was my second shooter again and did a great job covering the Mounties getting dressed up in their red serge.  The ceremony was held at St. Michael's Cathedral in Kelowna.  Its vaulted ceilings and red decor set the stage for a memorable and beautiful exchange of vows.  For their portraits we had the luxury of using Waterfront Park and the Laurel.  I especially love the men's portraits in their red serge in front of our vast Canadian landscape.  Don't get me wrong the girls were absolutely beautiful!  I was then able to spend some time privately photographing the bride and groom in some wonderful locations that they definitely made their own.  They embraced each other naturally with David's head tilting forward to come close to Sarah Jane and I thing this last series of portraits is so unique and iconic to the to of them!   We also covered their entire reception, but you will have to look at the online gallery to view all of those because there 1500 final edited images to enjoy!

Olivia & Eric - photoshoot in a thunderstorm!

Upon booking me for their wedding, Olivia & Eric decided that it would be great to shoot the engagement session while they were in Kelowna since they are from Calgary. So that afternoon I traveled down to a beach in the Mission with my wife to meet them, but as I pulled into the parking lot the rain started spitting and the thunder started to roll.  In the matter of a minute, rain was pouring down in buckets harder than I have seen in along time.  We asked each other if we were up to it and were all hesitantly excited! As the wind rolled in and blew the rain sideways we started shooting.  I can honestly say that I have always wanted to shoot sexy portraits in the rain and this was the perfect opportunity. Eric and Olivia are both stunning and very tall. I am usually taller than most of my clients, so this also lent itself to a different shooting experience as well. The rain was so hard that I could not even see as water was pouring down my face and viewfinder.  After running back up the trail from the beach the sun broke through and provided the most amazing backlighting for a series of dramatic, fashion inspired portraits while lying back on the picnic bench overlooking the lake.  After all that, double rainbows appeared a set a beautiful background for some romantic kisses. Next Olivia wanted to jump in the big mud puddles, so I handed her a pink umbrella to add some flare.  Our last idea was to run up the vibrant green hills with their little white dog, which was a joyful finale to a shoot that will stay in my memories forever.  My wife was a great help and I could not have done it without her!

A day on the beach with the Bertoia family

We joined Aundrea & Peter and their beautiful girls on Sarson's beach at sunset for a natural light portrait session that truly captured their love and connection with each other.  Family is so special and for myself these type of moments in early childhood are those that I look back at and feel such nostalgia.  I can imagine the feelings that Mia and Jasmine will have about these pictures when they are my age.

Natalie & Scott - rainy, beautiful wedding

Some of my favourite weddings ever have been on rainy days.  Natalie and Scott were not even fazed by the sight of rain.  In a sea of umbrellas, in Natalie's parent's beautiful back yard they exchanged their vows and quickly headed off is Scott's Dad's classic Mustang for their couple's portraits.  The rain broke and they had a stunning session at the Laurel Packing House and Waterfront Park with my team of three including Chontelle Wilson as my second photographer and Tina Prichard as my creative assistant. I love these photos so much and I hope it shows! Enjoy the slideshow below.

Kristi & Rich - an international affair

From England they came for the sun, the wine and Kristi's family.  Rich met Kristi while she was in England exploring her English roots.  After Rich's romantic proposal, they decided to travel back to Canada and celebrate their marriage in Kristi's hometown, Kelowna.  The cutest thing was all the little English children and their darling accents.  The ceremony took place at a stunning private gardens on the property of a family friend and continued at Manteo resort's patio and ballroom.  A smokey, but sunny day made for a very unique backdrop on the lake warf where Kristi & Rich danced, dipped and kissed for some stunning and romantic couple's portraits.  Their evening reception continued late into the night with the live musicians getting virtually everyone up on the dance floor rockin' the night away.

Stephanie & Kris - drumming-in the love

We started the day with Stephanie and all her girls, totaling eight, plus her mother at The Grand Okanagan.  At Summerhill Winery they joined the other half of this big wedding party for a unique ceremony that incorporated beautiful traditions from Kris's Cree heritage such as drumming and smudging. After a series of creative portraits around the estate of Summerhill Winery Stefanie & Kris entered their reception to a towel whirling Canadian welcoming.  The wedding party and couple danced the whole way in to launch a blast of a party.  Before dinner Kris's grandmother gave a blessing to the couple.  Even though I couple not understand her language, I could feel every bit of love for the two of them directly from her heart.

Wedding on the beach - Laura & Jordy

Occasionally I have the luxury of photographing a beach wedding; beautiful water background, sandy footsteps and waves lapping the shore. Bertram Beach Park has one of the most natural beaches and beautiful landscapes in the Okanagan.  Laura got ready with all the girls at the Eldorado, Kelowna's best heritage hotel on the waterfront, while Jordy & the guys arrived early at the beach to great the guests and get a few photos.  We continues some fun photos along the beach with the wedding party and the moved on to Summerhill Winery to make use of the lush vineyards and join their reception.  I believe that these photos express some of this couple's unique and beautiful character.

The marriage of Jami & David "Two of a Kind"

I love shooting all day wedding events!  It makes for such a great storybook and so many pictures to choose from.  Jason, Katlyn & I shot over 4600 images this day.  We started with Jamie getting ready at her parents gorgeous new house in West Kelowna. Her maid of honor planned all the bridesmaids outfits and Jami's was floored when she first saw them.  Stage Right Etc created all the bouquets and decor, which set the stage for a beautiful ceremony at Summerhill Winery in Kelowna.  There was so much love and affection amongst the whole family it made the wedding feel so genuine and memorable.  The vintage Mercedes was fired up and pulled up to the Pyramid for unique wedding party shots while enjoying some champagne. We hit a number of great locations for couple's portraits from the heritage buildings and vineyards at Summerhill to the warf by Manteo Resort at sunset and a private residence overlooking Kelowna from the Westside at dusk.  The party continued late into the night! Check out their slideshow set to one of Jamie's favourite songs - I love the high energy and beat!  Psst, both her husband and father are avid poker players!

Colleen & Joel exchange vows on the top of Silverstar mountain!

Silverstar Mountain Resort has impressive panoramic views and is a beautiful location for a wedding in the summer or winter.  Colleen & Joel laughed and danced more than any other wedding couple, making the wedding a blast to photograph.  There was even some air guitar while Joel rocked it out to "You Make Wanna Shout" for one of the most fun wedding party shoots of all time.  Beer was the only refreshment around while we were shooting the portraits and by my second beer I started unintentionally calling Joel & Colleen, "Jolleen."   The wedding party thought it was hilarious - It's just like "TomKat, "Brangelina," & "MadGuy."  But for Joel & Colleen I can truly tell that they love each other and its not just for all the publicity!  Keep a watch out for the old horse drawn carriage, Colleen's beautiful glamour poses, and Joel's air band performance in the slideshow below.

Jocelyne & Stephen's wedding at The Harvest Golf Club in Kelowna

I knew I was in for a treat after photographing their engagement portrait session last week.  I met the girls at Manteo resort to catch their last details of getting ready and produce some beautiful portraits using both the window light in their suite and the waterfront boardwalk and warf.  We were lucky enough to have Simone Wittenberg, a very accomplished photographer herself, work as a second shooter on this event.  She started the day photographing the guys and preparations for the ceremony.  After a beautiful tented ceremony overlooking the grounds of the Harvest with views of the Okanagan Valley we walked only a few steps into the orchards on the grounds of the Harvest to create a collection of wedding party and couples portraits.  I look forward to hearing back from Jocey and Stephen when they return from their honeymoon to Hawaii.  Please enjoy the slideshow below!

Jocey & Stephen's engagements session

Only a week before the wedding and we're out shootin' their e-session, but it was so worth it.  The first location we used was the original Casorso house,, which was so rustic and cute, then we continued down at a hidden beach access down in the Kelowna mission at sunset.  It was so great to get to know Jocey & Stephen more personally and I know it will make for even better pictures on their wedding day this coming Saturday. Check out the cutest slideshow ever right below!

Margarita & Scott's wedding

A beautiful, intimate family wedding that made me cry while shooting.  That really says it all!  But I'll say a bit more about this wonderful couple - We started at The Eldorado in a beautiful suite and spent a few moments on the waterfront boardwalk before running off to a small ceremony and champagne toast on the front lawn of Summerhill Winery with a beautiful view of the vineyards and Okanagan Valley.  After some stunning portraits at my favourite locations around the Summerhill estate Margarita & Scott joined their guests for a private dinner on the Sunset veranda.  I also attended their Spanish inspired reception in White Rock a couple of days later, which will be posted on the blog soon.  For now enjoy a great slideshow below.

Fiorella - a magic ball of fluff

She arrived on our doorstep after our tenants stumbled across her passed out the hot asphalt and brought home to revive this overheated darling.  They cared for this baby hummingbird for a day and asked if we would be interested in continuing to nurse her back to health.  With our love for animals and the magical essence of the hummingbird there is not way we could refuse.  After researching the best food for a hummingbird chick, we are now feeding her by hand a necessary protein mix 6-10 times per day and she also drinks her sugar water on her own regularly. She gives the cutest tweet as soon a she is hungry and is most happy either perched on her feeder, a branch, or the top of my LCD screen.  She also loves the warmth of our hands and enjoys a light touch.  She experiments with short flights and often lands on our hand if we put it out or occasionally on top of Katherine's head. Enjoy these first beautiful photos; I'm sure there will be many more to come!

Todd & Angela's wedding at Summerhill Pyramid Winery

13.5 hours and 4400 pictures later I still find Angela and Todd as adorable as ever.  We started at Amici's Salon, where all the girls got there hair and nails done.  I then met up with the guys at Westside Go-Karts where they definitely drove to win.  Angela was stunning to photograph throughout the day and Todd himself wasn't too shabby in hot pink. Their large entourage of 18 in their wedding party made for some pretty cool groups.  Champagne flowed and so did the tears through the reception speaches.  Even though Todd was runner-up go-karting that day, there is no doubt that winning Angela's hand is his ultimate prize! Cheezy, I know, but I could totally tell it was true.  Check out the slideshow below.

Danielle & Brent's wedding at Summerhill Winery

This wedding was a blast!  I loved working with Danielle and Brent; she moved with grace and ease in front of the camera and he played it up with the guys.  After an awesome session, a surprise champagne toast, we headed off to their reception, which was filled with non-stop laughs and tears.  DJ HayMaker kept the party goin' full force long into the night! Enjoy the slideshow.

Heather & David's wedding at Summerhill Winery

They came from Calgary to the beautiful Okanagan for their dream wedding at Summerhill Winery.  I was so happy to use some beautiful locations that my wife and I scouted the day before and was also ecstatic to find that David's uncle supplied his vintage Cadillac to drive the wedding party from Playa Del Sol to Summerhill.  Heather's blue eyes were stunning and caught my attention time and again as I was documenting the beauty of their day.  Check out another awesome slideshow of their wedding highlights.

Testing with Katherine at Summerhill Winery

I have so many weddings at Summerhill Winery this season that I thought my wife and I should find some unique locations on the Summerhill Estate and develop some cool concepts for couples and wedding party shoots on the wedding day.  My wife is definitely my muse and inspiration, plus some of my brains and I love so many of the images.  Thanks Katherine for helping out!  I will publish a slideshow from the last wedding shot at Summerhill on Sunday by the end of the week.

Karlee & Larry's engagements session

I photographed Karlee and Larry at the Okanagan Sun Football field & Knox Mountain on a beautiful sunny Canada day. The locations were awesome because they both had meaning for Karlee & Larry. Larry plays football with the Okanagan Sun and the two of them love the outdoors. Larry also proposed only weeks ago on the edge of a cliff overlooking the lake. I can tell they have a passionate and true love for each other and can't wait to photograph their wedding on June 5th, 2010.

I'm not a huge country music fan myself, but I definitely wanted to use one of their favourite musicians for this cool slideshow that you can checkout below.

Edyta & Tony's wedding - Greenwood, BC ceremony & Spirit Ridge, Osoyoos reception

When I first heard of Edyta's plans for the locations for her ceremony and reception, I decided that I had to photograph this wedding.  I am so happy I had the opportunity because not only were the locations absolutely stunning, but Edyta and Tony were so wonderful to work with.  I had scouted out a handful of storybook locations to shoot at between the ceremony and reception from the heritage downtown of Greenwood to an old train station in Midway, a old country lane in the most beautiful pasture in the world, a panoramic lookout over the Okanagan valley and the NK'MIP Desert Cultural Centre, as well as many other that we just didn't have time for.  With all the stops and the Okanagan heat, I didn't hear one complaint; they just enjoyed the time together, which made for breathtaking pictures.  Please enjoy the custom flash slideshow below.

Vintage Romance e-session

When I talked to Natalie and Scott I to find out a bit about their lifestyle and personality, I know that I had to take them out to my favourite little wine bar, The Rotten Grape before the engagement session.  Their summer patio was the perfect start to this fun shoot.

We then continued on to a vintage baseball diamond that my wife and I fell upon and scouted out a few days beforehand.  I love the patina of the teal and magenta colours and the rustic old buildings close by.

Finishing off with the beauty and scale of the towers of apple boxes, which is definitely part of the Okanagan landscape.  Natalie and Scott were so enjoyable to photograph because of their willingness to be themselves in front of the camera. I am truly looking forward to photographing their wedding on September 5th at their family home on the Kelowna Westside.

Wine Trails magazine cover shoot

What a great way to celebrate the arrival of Spring and the first signs of Summer!  I gladly accepted the opportunity to shoot the summer 2009 cover for Wine Trails magazine, which features the beauty and enjoyment experienced in outdoor dining.  My wife and I love eating outside as much as possible, so we felt right at home.  Thanks to Wine Trails Editor, Jennifer Schell-Pigott, for hosting such a beautiful get together, thanks to all the joyous guests from all across this great wine filled valley, and I am definitely appreciative that my apprentice Katlyn Pennington and my wife Katherine attended, which helped the shoot go so smoothly. Below are a few of my favourite images from the shoot.

Gala of Hope fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society www.galaofhope.ca
This is my fourth year donating my services to the Gala and sadly my wife was not here to attend this year's glamorous night with me since she is finishing her science degree in nutrition at UBC Vancouver.  Instead, I photographed the night away at Kelowna's Delta Grand Okanagan Hotel with my current apprentice, Katlyn Pennington.  We captured the fun and celebrations as funds were being raised for the Canadian Cancer Society.  This year, I also donated a two-hour event and glamour portrait session to be bundled with a very special women's day out that was auctioned off to the highest bidder.

Urban-Chic Engagement session in Kelowna downtown
Heather & David are from Calgary and are coming to Kelowna in July for a beautiful destination wedding at Summerhill Winery.  They wanted a bit of an urban feel for their engagement session, so I took them down to Kelowna's old fire hall and a back alley garage with a wonderful mix of rustic tones. We then continued down to Waterfront park to change to a scenic environment and enjoy the lake views.

"A World of Hearts" Valentine's Soiree fundraiser for UBCO's Global Nursing Citizens
Their first annual Valentine's Soiree fundraising event was a blast and a success.  This glamorous black tie event took place at my favourite venue, Summerhill Pyramid Winery, and started with a champagne reception and the musical stylings of Robert Fine who continued through the night to everybody's pleasure.  Next arrived the multi-course wine-paired dinner by the great chef Jesse Croy. The 200 or so guests continued the night with Minister Stockwell Day acting as an entertaining auctioneer, a wide selection of silent auctions, dancing, and a full casino.  I sure hope that my contribution as a sponsor of photography coverage for the night and a portrait session for the silent auction will help the society in their goals.

First engagement session of the Year - a winter romance!
Colleen and Joel are having their wedding at Silverstar Resort this coming August and wanted to have their engagement session set in a snowy environment.  We waited for a suitable time where Kelowna had snow, but wasn't frigid cold.  Along came a perfect Saturday and the three of us trooped out through the snow and found our way into Bertram Beach Park, which was closed for the winter.  We were planning a high energy session with sledding and snow ball fights, but poor Colleen came down with a bout of vertigo.  She was excited enough to do these photos that she still came out and took full part in a little bit more relaxed and romantic winter session.

Colleen's blue eyes are just stunning and I love Joel's lighthearted humour!  I am excited to shoot their intimate wedding within the nature around Silverstar Resort and the character of the town.

A Winter Wonderland Wedding
Wendy and Andy have been a great couple to work with from the beginning.  They brought me down to their hometown of Squamish BC to produce their engagement portraits in their favourite outdoor locations.  They are the most affectionate and endearing couple I have yet to photograph.  On December 20th my assistant and I photographed their small and intimate family wedding held at Benvoulin Heritage Church in Kelowna.  Almost a foot of snow had just fallen in the previous few days, which definitely completed the Christmas theme.  It was bitterly cold, so the majority of their portraits were produced indoors both at the church and the beautiful heritage beach house where I made use of the stunning window light.

Recent editorial portraits published in Smart Business and Oil and Gas Product News
In early October, I produced some stunning editorial portraits from a quick editorial shoot of Wayne Love, a local truck driver, for Siefkes-Petit to promote high-efficiency Teleflex Heaters.  We had great fun with his bright yellow rig, the Okanagan landscape and Wayne himself.  I welcome the opportunity to be able to produce portraits of our wiser generations because their faces often show so much character and draw the interest of the viewer in. Below are a couple of my favorite images!

Canadian Living editorial on Alaina Podmorrow
I was so happy to be able to have the opportunity to photograph Alaina for the "Me to We" awards editorial in Canadian Living magazine.  Her work in fundraising with the charity LW4LW (Little Women for Little Women in Afghanistan) that she started at only eight years old raises funds for teachers' salaries in Afghanistan who will provide equal learning experiences for Afghani girls. Alaina was a joy to photograph with her easy going nature and vibrant personality. I encourage you to support one of the youngest and most genuine philanthropists in our country

We were traveling in the Lower Mainland and took an afternoon to enjoy Campbell Valley Park, the place where my wife and I spent most of our time courting each other with walks in the park over 8 years ago.  Like always, I took the opportunity to shoot some glamorous photos of Katherine, Bella and even let the camera be turned on me.

Wild Festival for Youth
Once again, I have offered my services to support this great event, which educates school kids on their wildlife neighbors, as well as promoting the fine arts and poetry of children through Robert Bateman's "Get To Know" program.  The children actively built bird boxes, learned to catch and release trout, and met many bird-of-prey species. What an exciting event for all attending; it was a joy to photograph!

Marketing for Center Stage Speaker Bracket
Lately, I have been doing so much branding for my clients. It's strange; when I went into art school it was my goal to become an art director.  I worked my way into a job at one of the biggest ad agencies in Canada; however, decided after graduating that I would pursue photography.  Somehow this path had taken me full cycle.

Tyler Gerace is an inspiring individual who has developed a product that he is putting to market and has hired me to produce some artistic product photos of his speaker bracket.  That has developed into a relationship where we developed a logo, packaging label, and website.  Please visit his newly launched website www.centerstagebracket.com and pass the word around to any home theatre aficionado.
