As many of you know, I also am a department head for a digital photography diploma program here in Kelowna at the Centre for Arts and Technology. Recently, I was chosen from the three campuses across Canada as the first featured “e-celebrity,” which showcases the knowledge different instructors have in the industry to share with students across all three campuses for educational purposes. Since my career is primarily focused on an editorial style of wedding photography, I decided to let students experience the anatomy of a couple’s photoshoot starting from the conceptual development through the completion of the shoot. A team of talented and dedicated staff and students from the Centre for Arts and Technology came along to film the entire process from start to finish, which we will introduce when we post the video – thank you!!! To keep it as real as possible, I chose a couple I don’t know who were recommended to me. As soon as I saw a picture of our couple, Vincent and Valaura, Katherine and I had a flood of ideas of what we were inspired to create for their photoshoot. They naturally have a vintage vibe to them and it was our chance to showcase something we were wanting to do for a long time – a James Dean/Marilyn Monroe inspired retro motorcycle photoshoot.
I won’t get into all the details of the photoshoot in this post – once the video is complete, I will share it so everyone can have a behind the scenes experience of how an couple’s session unfolds. The day started out sunny and bright and then got progressively grey with warnings of a storm brewing. This photoshoot was going ahead rain or shine, so we had to just roll with it! As soon as we started shooting, rain came down with thunder and lightning! This isn’t the first time we’ve worked out in the rain on photoshoots – we’ve actually produced some award-winning images in the craziest weather. It wasn’t until the end of the shoot that the sun came out, produced an amazing sunset, and we even got a rainbow. Woo hoo!
We were very lucky to have access to an amazing 1950 Vincent motorcycle (OK, we think it’s super cool that the bike and our male model have the same name!). Thank you also to Giselle Gaspar and Brandie Jollimore from Mirror Mirror Day Spa & Salon for creating such amazingly gorgeous hair and makeup, plus Frock clothing for providing awesome vintage accessories! A HUGE thank you goes out to the beautiful private orchard estate in East Kelowna that graciously granted permission for this photoshoot. Also a big thank you to a few of the orchard workers who partook in some of the photos. It was a super fun day – thanks to everyone involved and of course to our phenomenal couple, Vincent and Valaura!
